Keira Knightley: 'I had no life' besides acting

NEW YORK (AP) ? Actress Keira Knightley seems to be in a good place personally and professionally. She's engaged to marry musician James Righton and stars in the film adaptation of "Anna Karenina" alongside Jude Law.

The 27-year-old tells Vogue magazine's October issue, there was a time when she wasn't in such a good place.

She recalls a time when the fame from such roles as "Bend it like Beckham" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise was too intense. She says she "literally had no life outside of acting" and desired to "not be 'on' all the time."

Instead of working, Knightley read books, cooked and lived in France.

The October issue of Vogue goes on sale nationwide Sept. 25.

"Anna Karenina" opens in limited release on Nov. 16.

Fundamental Fridays: Payment Processing for Internet Retailers ...

For the next few weeks we are going to focus this series on payment processing for specific market segments and share some of the basics things you should consider based on your specific business needs. This week let?s start with the Internet Retail space.

Internet-based retail continues to grow by leaps and bounds ? that?s no secret.? How can you use payment processing to help you optimize this growth?? Let?s explore.

Process payments in real-time

By processing payments in real-time you can get immediate feedback and handle payment issues on the spot. Real-time authorizations prompt your customers for another card if the first one is declined. ? This will allow you process the transaction and help ensure your customers? receive their purchases in a timely manner.

Offer alternative payments

While many customers prefer to make online purchases with their credit or debit cards some customers prefer not to use these payment types online.?? Give your customers alternative payment options such as PayPal and Bill Me Later.? By offering alternative payments you will open your doors to a wider customer base.? More options mean more payments.

Protect sensitive customer information

Fraud and security is a true cost of doing business online. ?Your customers want to know their sensitive information is secure when they do business with you. ?Solutions like tokenization will address security issues when the card data is in transit, at rest, and while in use. ?Tokenization replaces card account information with ?tokens? generated by a third-party service provider. ?There are providers who now make it possible to use tokens in place of card numbers for all successive payment transactions? meaning you can enhance your customer experience by having card information on file for repeat customers.

Better understand your customers through payments

A payment is the ultimate customer interaction.? You can begin to leverage this information to help inform business decisions.? For example, using affluence indicators may help you identify high-earning customers.? With this information you can target them with specific offers and promotions.

It?s the emphasis on customer experience that will ultimately determine the success of an internet retail merchant.? And that goes beyond product offering or ease of website navigation. How easy customers can pay for their products and services ? via payment choice, trust in secure transactions, and how efficiently their order is processed? all play a role in customer experience. ??We hope these tips help you make payments a part of your overall customer experience.

Still have questions about payment processing for Internet Retailers? Leave your thoughts in the comments or visit us at booth #736 at Shop.org next week.

News and Society -Crime News Blog: Suicide Bombers and the

Early this year, a suicide bomber that exploded on his way to his target in Damaturu, Yobe State of Nigeria was reported to be shouting that he was doing the 'work of God' and that he would not stop. But that was just before he died after the impact of the explosion threw him into a ditch. I remember that televised little girl that was laden with explosives and smuggled into Israel sometime ago, but before the bomb could go off, she started pleading that people should help her dismantle the bombs because she didn't want to die. It was indeed very emotional watching her live on television. Definitely, she was sent on that mission against her will. Yes, so many like her who are fortunate to find any way of escape do so, but may never return to their people, otherwise they would be killed for abandoning the 'work of God'. Work of God indeed!

Just last week, two suicide bombers operating on a motorcycle were shattered as their bombs on their way to carried out attacks on the ever busy Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna. Thank God that the planned attack was divinely stopped, otherwise, hundreds of families would have been thrown into mourning that Tuesday afternoon. There have been scores of such suicide bomb attacks in the northern part of country in recent times and thousands have been killed. Now, the questions are: What motivates a person to detonate explosives to kill him/herself and others? How do the terror groups get finances and their couriers? Who trains them? What religious and psychological manipulations do they receive before their missions? Are there also diabolical aspects of the mission? Why do they always have charms, amulets and Spiritists with them?

And strangely at the above-mentioned Kaduna incident, after the explosion killed the would-be bombers, suddenly a strange swarm of bees appeared at the scene and dispersed the crown that gathered to witness the incident. It was televised. True! Are they truly working for God? The 'God' of sorcerers and murderers? And most importantly, for our discussion here, is their any reward of paradise, many wives or eternal prize awaiting them after death??

Suicide bombings as we are now witnessing in Nigeria and many other parts of the world are basically carried out by Jihadists; those who forcefully want to impose their religious beliefs on others. They dubiously do this under the guise of fight for their religion or brethren which they often claim are under threat. But it has been proved that these efforts are never propelled by religious but by political, social and economic motives. Or how else do you explain the attacks on national, financial, media, humanitarian and even same religion institutions. But we can't go into all of those here. We'll just try to comment on the religious and psychological aspects of this satanic enterprise.

The suicide bombers (and all Jihadists) are always thoroughly brainwashed before they embark on these evil missions. They are made to believe that they and their religion are hated. And this brainwashing takes a time of constant, well-planned and coordinated series of indoctrination. This is part of the reason why they are often kept in a camp for a period of time or they have sat under the teachings of other pro-jihadists who masquerade as clerics. There, they would systematically be fed with lies and hate messages about their targets until they believe and make up their minds for the mission; which they are always deceived into believing that they are doing the work and will of God, and that they will be rewarded with paradise, wives, gifts and so many other false, dubious and satanic promises.

But not for the high-level of deception and other diabolical involvement surrounding these missions, one would have expected the would-be bombers to always ask their sponsors how murdering an innocent person would earn an eternal reward when the Almighty, our cultures and even human instincts have warned us against such. Secondly, if truly there are eternal rewards, why do these terror masters always exempt themselves and their relatives from going on such missions? Look at the case of Osama Bin Laden, as he was sponsoring and coordinating these missions all over the world, he carefully gathered his wives and children into a cosy palatial home in Pakistan, which worth millions of dollars. And we learnt he sternly warned his children not to take his path.

Then, in Nigeria, some of the members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect currently terrorising the country have told us how the leadership of the group would always exempt their tribesmen and relations, but would assign and prepare others for suicide missions. They also gave the account of how these leaders would appropriate the widows of the bombers, the stolen exotic cars and money to themselves.

The truth is that there is no paradise or eternal blessing awaiting a suicide bomber or any other murderer for that matter. That promise is definitely from the Devil; the master of deception. But unfortunately, the unrepentant murderers would have found out but too late that they died in vain. Sadly, from the excruciating painful death through the piercing shrapnel of explosives to hell fire; where there will be suffering, weeping and gnashing of teeth forever. Till next week, God bless!

Google awarded patent for face-to-unlock for multiple users

In a day filled with announcements, Google has managed to grab itself a pretty unique patent. The search giant has gotten the rights to a patent which allows the logging in of multiple users by facial recognition. Patent ?090 covers methods that allow a ?computing device? to recognize one or more users? identities based on facial recognition, and then give them access to resources specifically assigned to them. It simple terms, it?s just an enhanced version of the face unlock feature the company has on its Android 4.0+ devices now.

We don?t have any inside information into what Google?s plans are with this new technology, but all indications point to some time of Android involvement. As you can see from a small snippet of the patent filing below:

? Implementations can include one or more of the following features. For example, the camera can be physically integrated with the computing device. The computing device can include a phone. ?

This sounds like a very interesting feature that would benefit future Android phones down the road if implemented. Google is really trying to shake things up with all of its newly awarded patents, like the one it won for technology that?ll let users answer calls using both ends of the phone. Again, who knows what the company has planned for this latest patent.

Air Force insists it has Albuquerque fuel issue under control

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. ? As environmental disaster sites go, it doesn't look like much. A scattering of rusting wellhead covers and a machine noisily sucking hydrocarbon vapors from the earth scarcely hint at what has grown into a $50-million headache.

But nearly 500 feet beneath this spot, a plume of aviation gas and jet propellant that leaked undetected for decades from an Air Force fuel depot has sunk into the aquifer, drifting toward wells that help supply Albuquerque's drinking water.

Base officials acknowledge that millions of gallons of fuel went missing, and although they don't know exactly how close the leading edge of the plume is to the municipal water supply, they insist that there is little likelihood of contamination.

"The Air Force absolutely owns this problem, and we're committed to remediating it," said Col. Jeffrey Lanning, who recently assumed command of the 377th Air Base Wing, which operates Kirtland.

But neighbors are mistrustful, with some accusing the Air Force of soft-pedaling the extent of the leak.

"They aren't telling the truth," said Jim McKay, a former software engineer who criticizes the Air Force's water-monitoring methods. "They aren't trying to find out what it is. They are minimizing their efforts and reporting them as thorough."

At a recent community meeting with Lanning, Marian Jordan, president of the Elder Homestead Neighborhood Assn., voiced her worries.

"If it does get into the water, what are we going to do?" she asked. "What are we going to drink? I want to know when you will have a plan, so I can tell the people."

Lanning assured her that officials were still working on a contingency plan in case the plume reached the city's drinking water, but added, "I don't have a date for you."

Established during World War II, Kirtland is home to Sandia National Laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory, a pararescue training school and a large underground nuclear weapons repository. It is a major source of jobs, with more than 20,000 employees ? including 3,000 active-duty personnel ? pumping an estimated $3 billion annually into the regional economy.

The base has seen its share of antiwar protests and complaints about jet noise and poor handling of radioactive materials from nuclear research, but in 2005 local business leaders and elected officials united to defeat a Defense Department proposal to shut the facility.

The problem dates to the late 1950s, when a fuel off-loading facility was built on the sprawling air base bordering Albuquerque's Southeast Heights neighborhood. Pumps moved fuel from trucks and train cars via an underground pipe to large holding tanks.

At some point the buried pipe started leaking and the volatile fuel seeped deep into the sandy soil. Estimates range from 8 million to 24 million gallons. No one noticed until 1999, when fuel started pooling on the surface.

The facility was shut down and a handful of monitoring wells were dug to gauge the extent of the problem.

"What we found were holes in those large-bore underground pipes," said Brent Wilson, the base's chief civil engineer, while visiting the now-demolished facility in August. "It appeared at that time to be a limited leak localized to this area here."

The Air Force installed soil vapor extraction units, which pull fuel vapors from the ground and burn them in an internal combustion engine.

In 2007, further testing revealed the fuel plume had reached groundwater and spread more than a mile to the north, across the base boundary. The biggest concern was a highly toxic chemical called ethylene dibromide. Known as EDB, it was used as an additive in leaded aviation gas until the Air Force switched to unleaded jet fuel the mid-1970s.

The base officials reported this spring that some fuel had dissolved into the aquifer, complicating cleanup efforts. The Air Force has a $50-million, performance-based contract with an engineering firm to fix the problem. It previously paid another contractor $10 million and has laid out $12 million for a new fuel depot a few hundred feet from the old one.

Bruce Thomson, a University of New Mexico engineering professor who chairs a civilian board advising base officials, suspects that the Air Force delayed drilling monitoring wells to the water table because it didn't want to acknowledge the full extent of the problem. "I don't think that was an oversight," he said.

The good news, he said, is that 50 feet or 80 feet below the top of the water table, EDB is undetectable. "That provides a high degree of confidence that the [city's] production well will not be contaminated," he said.

Jim Davis, director of the New Mexico Environment Department's resource protection division, said his agency directed the Air Force to drill 78 test wells to define the periphery of the fuel plume. Nine new wells are being sunk around the northeast corner of the plume to determine how close it is to the nearest city well.

In addition, two new soil vapor extraction units with 10 times the air-moving capacity of the originals should come online in November, Davis said. Further remedies will be needed to remove fuel that has dissolved in groundwater, he added.

"I think the biggest concern out there is fear," he says, but he points out that his agency has plenty of experience in successfully cleaning up fuel leaking from gas station storage tanks.

Although Davis thinks it's unlikely, should EDB-tainted groundwater reach the nearest city's well field, those wells would be shut down or the water would be run through filters to remove the chemical.

The state is also working with the Air Force to craft a contingency plan in the event the EDB-laden plume does reach the city's drinking water. "People are not going to drink contaminated water," Davis said. "It simply won't happen."
