NCSoft invests big in new studio from Blizzard, Relic, and Sony Online veterans

Gaming has a new developer that is looking to make a big entrance into the free-to-play market.

Molten Games comprises former Blizzard, Relic, and Sony Online developers. It?s working on a new, unannounced free-to-play game with triple-A production values. Korean publisher NCSoft, which publishes popular games like Guild Wars 2, made a multimillion dollar equity investment in Molten but is leaving the development decisions and all ownership rights to Molten.

?We really liked how a lot of startups are coming up and offering opportunities for developers to join a company that enables them to control their intellectual property and have ownership over the company,? Molten vice president of creative development Blaine Smith told GamesBeat. ?We wanted to do something a little different where we went out and sought an equity investment ? where the initial investment isn?t just funding our [first game project] but it is also funding the company.?

Molten and NCSoft aren?t disclosing the size of the investment or how much equity NCSoft now holds in Molten.

The studio also isn?t revealing any details about its first game. All it will say is that the project isn?t a massively multiplayer online role-playing game like World of Warcraft or a multiplayer online-battle-arena title like League of Legends.

?Molten Games has assembled a wildly talented and experienced team, and we?absolutely believe they will create and run an amazing new game experience,? NCSoft chief executive Taek Jin Kim said. ?They?re setting the bar high for themselves, with a?strong desire to shake up the online gaming space by creating something new and unique in our industry.?

Molten Games chief product officer Paul Della Bitta managed the global e-sports team at Blizzard, and the company says it understands the value of competitive gaming.

?We?re all competitors here at the studio,? said Smith. ?Whatever the game is, if it has a competitive element, it usually finds its way into our hands and we love to take a look at it. Competition and e-sports ? all of that stuff ? we?re gearing our game toward that [audience].?

If that sounds like Molten is taking notice of the success that games like League of Legends and Dota 2 are having, that?s because it is. After reiterating that Molten isn?t working on a MOBA, the developers confirmed that they took some inspiration from some of the world?s biggest free-to-play games.

?We feel that there are a lot of opportunities ? and there are a lot of MOBAs coming out right now,? said Della Bitta. ?We just felt like that space is too competitive, but there are a lot of opportunities in a lot of gameplay styles that lend themselves to a similar free-to-play business model.?

Smith went on to explain that Molten wants to enter the free-to-play space with a triple-A product. He elaborated on what ?triple-A? means to Molten.

?Triple-A is a high-quality bar. It?s a $60 game. It?s a complete experience,? he said. ?I think very few free-to-play games hit the bar that we want to hit. Our game experience should feel complete. It should feel polished to players.?

Smith and Della Bitta promised to debut more details about Molten?s first title in the near future. For now, it just wants to make its presence known and that it is working with NCSoft on a free-to-play game that has a budget comparable to that of a major console release. Molten?s leadership is confident that it can convince gamers to invest their time and money just as they convinced NCSoft that it is working on something special.

Samsung Galaxy Folder is a clamshell-shaped Android smartphone for Korea

IntoMobile writes, The clamshell form factor is pretty much dead with most of us opting for all-touchscreen devices, instead. There are some folks who still love this concept and for them Samsung will unveil Galaxy Folder, an Android-powered flip phone. This device, however, may not come to the West and could easily be available only in South Korea. Aside from boasting the traditional T9 phone keypad, this phone will also come with a smallish WVGA screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, LTE connectivity support and a specially design UI. And that?s about all we have at this stage ? no pricing?

Israel condemns EU move on settlements

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel condemned new guidelines by the European Union on Tuesday which ban EU funding and cooperation with Israeli institutions situated in territory captured by the Jewish state in the 1967 Mideast war.

In order to obtain EU funding from 2014, Israeli projects will be required to sign on to a clause stipulating they operate within the country's pre-1967 borders and not in east Jerusalem, the West Bank or Golan Heights.

The clause is a powerful endorsement by the EU of the Palestinian demand that its future borders be based on the pre-1967 lines. The Palestinians are demanding that Israel stop building Jewish settlements in the West Bank as a condition for the resumption of peace talks which collapsed in 2008.

Israel says talks should restart without preconditions and that all core issues should be resolved through dialogue. It has frequently called on the Palestinians to resume peace talks.

Israel's deputy foreign minister Zeev Elkin called the EU decision a "very significant and worrying move."

"It certainly doesn't add to the atmosphere of peace talks. On the contrary, it fuels the Palestinian refusal to return to the negotiation table," he said Tuesday.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is back in the region this week for consultations on his attempts to restart negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. He is not scheduled to visit Israel or the Palestinian territories but is set to meet with Palestinian Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan Tuesday evening.

A spokesman for the European delegation in Tel Aviv said a "territorial applicability clause" will feature in agreements between Israel and the EU from 2014. "Israeli entities situated in the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem will not be eligible for EU funding," he said.

He emphasized that the guidelines would not affect Israel's private sector or companies but rather bodies like research centers or NGOs.

Many Israelis object to withdrawing from the West Bank or parts of east Jerusalem because the areas carry deep religious significance for devout Jews who consider it their biblical homeland.

Another concern is that violent groups could fill the vacuum if Israel withdraws from areas under its control, as was the case in the Gaza Strip where the Islamic militant group Hamas took over after Israel pulled out in 2005.

Speaker event: Fostering innovation's connection to gardening | IT ...

My apartment in downtown Toronto is in the midst of dense commercial buildings and I never imagined it?d be a suitable place to do any gardening. My only outdoor space is a small landing, about 20 square feet, that is only meant to be used as a fire escape leading out the back door. For a long time it was left grungy and unappealing ? but this summer my girlfriend and I turned the situation around.

I bought some green turf from Canadian Tire that gave the appearance of grass and cut it to fit the landing area, covering up the rusted metal slats. We cleaned the area and placed some planters along railings and in a window sill that hosts a healthy herb garden. There are potted flowering vines on the landing and window sill that are slowly making their way up twine guides and covering the brick and metal with bright green leaves. Now it?s a pleasure to stand out there and barbeque, plus harvest fresh herbs for cooking and to give away to friends and family.

With the help of nature, we turned a formerly dead space into a livable space that?s full of life. That?s what innovation can do for an economy ? it transforms the useless into the useful, it reinvigorates market activity where stagnation once took hold. It?s a creative idea, even esoteric, and it?s one Cindy Gordon will be exploring tomorrow at the first event in AcceleratorU?s summer speaker series.

Join us:?What does innovation and a healthy garden have in common?

A part of the Summer of Innovation, the speaker series will be moderated by myself on behalf of IT World Canada. Kicking off as the featured speaker of tomorrow?s event, Gordon is the CEO and founder of Helix Commerce International Inc. and involved in a number of entrepreneur activities. She?s the co-founder of AccerleratorU, a co-founder at a crowdfunding software platform that?s just been adopted by the City of Waterloo, and has a long history of driving organizational transformation at enterprises like CIBC and Research in Motion.

Please join us tomorrow at noon at the IBM Innovation Center in Markham, Ont. Here are some of the questions Cindy will be exploring:

1. What does innovation have to do with nature?

2. What are the seeds that are needed to nurture innovation?

3. Why does innovative grow on the edges of nature vs the center of nature?

4. What do social networks have to do with root systems?

5. What are the weeds that impact innovation?

Hi guys. :D

Hiya. :D
I would like to introduce myself.
I am a GM looking to start some role plays here. Or join some. :) I would love it if you would be interested in checking out my ideas. I have an idea for starting a RP where the characters play as different mythological gods, their own custom Prehistoric gods (Such as the T-Rex/Neanderthal god, etcetera), or even members of the Cthulhu Mythos! :D
I have also noticed that there is some kind of character minimum for this thread. Why is that?

  • Irmo 9 ? Laurens 7? The Laurens Little League 11 Year Old All-Stars Team bid for a state championship came to an end last night as Irmo defeated them 9-7 in a game that went back and forth all night up in Easley? The teams were tied 7 all going into the top of the 6th inning when Irmo took the lead on a 2 run homer by a player that had already hit two home runs in the game? Laurens then just could not get the needed hits in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie or take the lead? Steve Foster did have a homerun for Laurens in the game? Congratulations to the team for a great effort in the series.?

Braves:

  • Well as most all?baseball fans know, the Braves and all other teams were off last night as they break for the MLB All-Star Game tonight up in New York? By the way a reminder that the game can be seen on FOX tonight with pre-game coverage starting at 7:30? The league that wins the game will have home-field advantage for the World Series this October
  • Also you may remember that Braves closer Craig Kimbrel was the only Brave selected for tonight?s All-Star Game until the fans voted Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman into the final spot on the NL roster last Thursday marking his first appearance in the mid-summer classic? On Saturday Freeman injured his thumb and will not be able to play so the Braves catcher Brian McCann was selected as his replacement on the roster? This marks McCann?s 7th appearance in the on the all-star roster and he was the MVP of the game in 2010 when he delivered a game-winning double for the NL.

Greenville Drive: Well the Drive and the Savannah Sand Gnats finally got to play a complete game of baseball yesterday after all the rain down on the coast of Georgia over the weekend.

  • Drive 2 ? Gnats 1? In the first game yesterday which was the completion of a game suspended due to weather back on Saturday, the Drive took a 2-1 win over the Savannah by scoring a a run in the top of the 9th inning to break a 1-1 tie? Savannah loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th but were unable to get the tying or winning run across the plate.
  • Gnats 7 ? Drive 4 ?. In the regularly scheduled game last night, Savannah bounced back and took a 7-4 win over the Drive? The Drive lead 3-1 going into the bottom of the 6th when Savannah scored 3 runs to go up 4-3 then added 2 more in the 7th and 1 in the 8th.? The Drive are not scheduled to play again until tomorrow night when they start a week long home stand with the Ashville Tourist being the team in at Flour Field? Just wondering if they might stay on the coast and try to make one or both of the games rained out in Savannah.

Florida Appeals Court To Foreclosure Defense Firm: Quality Of Legal Work In One Case "Disturbing" & "Resulted In A Waste Of Judicial Resources &, Perhaps, An Injustice To The Litigants"

When Emmett B. Hagood III's foreclosure case came before a judge last year, his Orlando lawyers were nowhere to be found. The judge promptly ruled against Hagood, and his home was eventually auctioned off by Wells Fargo & Co.

Now an appeals court has fined KEL law firm partner Craig Lynd and staff lawyers Richard W. Withers and Angela Domenech, citing them for "multiple acts of professional negligence," according to a recent ruling from the Fifth District Court of Appeal.

Though it found no intentional misconduct, the court's order on June 28 stated the lawyers had shown "systemic flaws in internal procedures, a lack of understanding of substantive law and rules of procedure, and a lack of supervision by senior lawyers."

They were fined a combined $1,000.

"The quality of the legal work performed by KEL's attorneys in this case is disturbing," the court said in a preliminary opinion in May. "It resulted in a waste of judicial resources and, perhaps, an injustice to the litigants."

It was the latest legal snag for the Kaufman, Englett & Lynd law firm, known for its high-volume foreclosure defense, bankruptcy and loan-modification practices. The firm has been the target of a number of client complaints to the Florida Bar alleging impropriety or ethical violations. Some have been resolved in the firm's favor, while others are still being investigated.

The Hagood case, however, was an embarrassment and "one of those 'perfect storm' circumstances not likely to be repeated," said KEL attorney Richard Withers, the case's lead counsel.

"The fine was, fortunately, modest. I've practiced for 40-plus years without being criticized or sanctioned by a court," he said in an email. "So it still stung. We learn from it and keep working."

The errors in Hagood's case began with a clerical scheduling mistake that caused KEL's lawyers to miss the final foreclosure hearing, according to court records. After the trial judge ruled for Wells Fargo, KEL argued "excusable neglect" in a motion to dismiss the judgment. The trial court rejected KEL's motion, setting the stage for the appeal.

Things got worse at the appellate court, where KEL argued its lawyers had never even received notice of the final foreclosure hearing ? a point refuted by the record, according to the court. Though KEL later realized its mistake, the lawyers failed to acknowledge that to the appellate judges and instead launched a new set arguments against the lower court ruling.

Withers said the situation was caused by a communications breakdown between himself and Domenech, who was working remotely at the time. Lynd's name was added to the appeal only as a formality and he was not directly engaged in the case, though that drew the judges' criticism as well.

Withers said the firm has now established new protocols to prevent the mistakes from happening again.

'Despicable Me 2' minions top Sandler's 'Grown Ups 2' at box office

By Chris Michaud and Lisa Richwine

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The mighty minions of "Despicable Me 2" beat human comedy star Adam Sandler's new "Grown Ups 2" at the U.S. and Canadian movie box office this weekend.

The animated film featuring the crowd-pleasing yellow minions collected $44.8 million from Friday through Sunday, edging out Sandler's comedy sequel, which racked up $42.5 million in ticket sales - in line with industry projections.

Big-budget thriller "Pacific Rim," an apocalyptic battle that pits towering monsters against giant, human-piloted robots, settled for a third-place finish with $38.3 million, at the low end of industry projections for the film.

Sandler's "Grown Ups" sequel reunites the comedian with pals Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade in a follow-up to the 2010 original, and adds a younger generation of characters including "Twilight" actor Taylor Lautner. This time, Sandler's character, Lenny, moves back to his hometown.

Critics bashed the movie, with only 7 percent recommending the film among reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website. But Sandler fans turned out and audiences gave the film a "B" rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.

"This is a great start," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures Entertainment, adding that "for us to succeed at this level bodes well for the future of the film," which he noted out-grossed the first film's opening.

"Despicable Me 2," featuring the voice of Steve Carell, made another powerhouse showing in its second weekend at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters. The film, produced by Illumination Entertainment, brought its worldwide total to $472 million through Sunday.

The 3D spectacle "Pacific Rim" tells the story of an epic clash between giant alien monsters and human-controlled robots that try to save the world from the invaders. The film stars actors best known in cult television shows including Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman from FX's drama "Sons of Anarchy" and Idris Elba from HBO's gritty drug series "The Wire."

"Pacific Rim" won over many critics, earning a 73 percent positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a strong A- on CinemaScore.

The Warner Bros. release cost $180 million to produce, with partner Legendary Pictures providing 75 percent of the cost. It added $53 million in international markets over the weekend, for a global total of $91.3 million.

"We're very pleased with where we are right now," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros president of domestic distribution, noting that as recently as a few weeks ago the film was tracking to open anywhere from $20 million to the low $30 millions.

"Those are very, very solid numbers for a genre movie," he said, referring to the high scores that female and older audiences have given the film.

"Our job now is to broaden the base, and try to bring more families in. Young and old, both really like the movie," he added. "And summertime is certainly the time to do that."

Rounding out the chart's top five, the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy "The Heat" rung up sales of $14 million at domestic theaters. Walt Disney Co's "The Lone Ranger" starring Johnny Depp earned $11.1 million.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, distributed "Pacific Rim." Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Despicable Me 2." Sony Corp's movie studio distributed "Grown Ups 2." "The Heat" was released by 20th Century Fox, the movie studio owned by 21st Century Fox.

The Civil Rights Stand Of A Young Gerald Ford

President Gerald R. Ford, the only American to serve as both vice president and president without ever being elected to either office, was born 100 years ago Sunday.

Ford will be remembered for his role in the turbulent post-Watergate era. But a little-known story from his college days might also serve to define Ford's character.

The Gerald Ford We Know

In 1973, Ford was a congressman from Grand Rapids, Mich., who had risen through the ranks to become House minority leader. In those days before C-SPAN, Ford was barely known to most Americans.

But that all changed in December of that year, when President Richard Nixon selected him to replace Spiro Agnew as vice president because of Agnew's bribery scandal. By the following August, Nixon was out, and Ford inherited the Oval Office.

In one of his signature moments, Ford told the nation, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over ... Our constitution works."

That line would be followed ? barely a month later ? by another defining moment: A pardon "for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed."

It was an act of healing for Ford, but unforgivable for many.

In the White House, Ford also had to deal with a worrisome economy marked by rising inflation. Not to mention the final days of the Vietnam War. He also chose to continue Nixon's aggressive and complicated pursuit of better relations with the Soviet Union and China.

In the 1976 presidential campaign, Democrat Jimmy Carter pledged a fresh start after Watergate and government corruption. Ford lost a close election and his bid to win the presidency in his own right.

These are all familiar elements of Ford's bio. But in recent years, another interesting story has come to light, one you may not have heard.

An Early Stand For Civil Rights

A documentary film released last year, Black and Blue, explores an incident from 1934, when Ford was a football player at the University of Michigan.

Georgia Tech was visiting Ann Arbor for a game against the Wolverines, but would only play on the condition that Michigan's lone African-American player, Willis Ward, not be allowed to play. Ward was Ford's roommate on road trips.

"Jerry Ford was incensed that the University of Michigan would dare to bench one of their other star players and his good friend," says Ward's grandson, Buzz Thomas, a former Michigan state senator. "So Ford went to the coaching staff and said that if Willis Ward doesn't play, I will not play."

Ultimately, Ford did play in the game ? at Ward's request.

"It was Willis Ward then came back and urged Jerry Ford to play in that game and to excel and really lay on a good hit for him that day," Thomas says, "which, in fact, he did." That game against Georgia Tech was Michigan's only win that year.

Ward died 30 years ago after a long career as an attorney and judge in Michigan.

The story of Ward's benching is not a great moment in the school's storied football history, but people close to both men say it speaks to Ford's character.

The incident that was on Ford's mind in 1999, when he took one of the final political stands of his long life by writing an op-ed piece for The New York Times, supporting the University of Michigan and its use of affirmative action in its admissions policies. Two lawsuits had challenged that practice.

Barry Rabe, a professor at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in Ann Arbor, sees a direct link between the young Ford ? the football player who took a stand ? and the aging former president.

"I think that tale," Rabe says, "as a 21-year-old in Ann Arbor, leads us fast-forward to see someone who would be willing to take tough decisions that reasonable people might disagree with or raise questions about, but to act with a sense of public spirit and in the public interest."

When you are considering renovating the interior of your home, it is important to consider the comfort factor. Every home has its flaws, but trying to live with one that makes you very unhappy will just make you more stressed. You may be tempted to think of comfort as a luxury, but if you want to be happy, stop ignoring your discomfort and start remedying it instead. You should consider replacing furniture that you do not like to use. You can also do something as simple as lowering a shelf that is just out of reach to make accessing the things you store on it easier. Even something like replacing a coffee table with something that you don?t bang your legs on can be a big help.

If there isn?t any space in a room, make it bigger. Good organization can help to clear up clutter, but even that cannot always free up enough space. Adding just a few inches will make your room feel much bigger so that you will be more relaxed whenever you go into it.

There are many recreational features that both enhance your home and are considered big time selling features, like a swimming pool, hot tub or jacuzzi. Even though basketball hoops and workout equipment are a smaller additions, they can still be fun. By adding a recreational area to your home, you will gain fun activities now and increased value later.

Look closely at your home?s lighting if you believe your home is making you tired. Eyestrain and fatigue are often caused by poor lighting conditions. Change the lights you have to give a new look to your home.

When you are working on improving your yard?s landscape, consider going at least partly organic in your methods. If you are at home a lot, or would like a reason to stay at home, tending a garden and enjoying the beautiful scenery that accompanies it is a great idea. If you are too busy to maintain it, get someone to help you and just enjoy the benefits that you get from your garden. Gardens are beneficial in a number of ways, such as improving air quality and people?s moods. Choosing the right plants for your garden can mean that you have some home-grown fruits and vegetables for your table.

Transform the outside of your home in a creative way. You can make your home look fresher and more up-to-date with just one or two home improvements, like painting the exterior or replacing the roof. When your house has great curb appeal, you will feel proud every time you see your house as you are coming home.

You probably spend more time in your home than you do anywhere else, which makes it vital that you love living there. Adding fun things to your home not only increases its value, but also makes you more relaxed.

[All iPads] Current iPad Owner - Looking for opinions about cheaper tablets for work.

Hey Everyone,

I currently have a third generation iPad that I use for most of my email, surfing, and videos. See my signature for all my devices.

What I'm asking is:

I teach Marching Band and Drum Corps. and I put all my music pages into iBooks on my iPad. It's great! The bad part is that I have dropped my iPad twice and currently have no more AppleCare+ replacements. I would like to buy a very cheap Android or Windows tablet to be able to bring to practice, put the music scores on it, along with the drill pages, and not care if it rains, or gets dropped every now and then. The only thing I really need it to do is to be able to save and read PDFs, and to be able to access them without Internet (basically saving them to the device itself). I am looking to spend no more than 100 bucks, maybe a tad bit more.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Theresa Andersson's 'Street Parade' Mini-Documentary

If you saw the Muses Parade during Mardi Gras 2012, you might remember that Theresa Andersson performed aboard a giant puppet bird (see photo above). "I rode on this bird 12 ft. up in the air, and the Shreveport Puppeteers actually puppeteered and pushed the bird up the street. There was no motor," Andersson told (Nola Defender). Footage from the parade was used in the video for her song "Hold On To Me" from the 2012 album Street Parade.

What most people missed (based on its YouTube view count) is "Behind The Scenes: 'Street Parade' Mini-Documentary" (below), a fascinating look at the work that went into Theresa Andersson and her crew's appearance in that Muses Parade.

We get a sense of the enormous effort that goes into all parades, with the added logistical hurdles to performing atop a giant egret puppet. There's gear to line up, like generators, lighting, mics, rolling drum stands (hijacked shopping carts), as well as the singers, the dancers, the band, costumes, and everything else needed for a krewe of 50+ people.

The "mini-documentary" is less than 13 minutes long. Starting at the 8-minute mark, we follow Andersson & krewe along the parade route.

Here's the music video that resulted from the shoot documented above: "Hold On To Me".

(AP) ? One of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the Asiana Airlines disaster was struck by a fire truck while she was covered by firefighting foam, a new detail that raised the possibility she may have survived the crash only to die in its chaotic aftermath.

It wasn't clear, however, whether Ye Meng Yuan, 16, was already dead or whether she was alive after Saturday's crash.

Authorities were still trying to determine the cause of death, and San Mateo County coroner Robert Foucrault said his initial results would likely be released sometime next week. He would not comment on the police investigation.

Police said the teenager was on the ground and covered in foam that rescuers had sprayed on the burning wreckage of Flight 214. When the truck moved while battling the flames, rescuers discovered her body in the tire track, police spokesman Albie Esparza said.

The airliner collided with a rocky seawall just short of its intended airport runway on Saturday. Two people were killed and dozens of others injured although most suffered minor injuries. Investigators have said the plane came in too low and slow.

Nearly a week after the crash, investigators have pieced together an outline of the event ? what should have been a smooth landing by seasoned pilots turning into a disaster.

With each new bit of information, the picture emerging is of pilots who were supposed to be closely monitoring the plane's airspeed, but who didn't realize until too late that the aircraft was dangerously low and slow.

Nothing disclosed so far by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators indicates any problems with the Boeing 777's engines or the functioning of its computers and automated systems.

"The first thing that's taught to a pilot is to look at the airspeed indicator. It is the most important instrument in the cockpit," said Lee Collins, a pilot with 29 years and 18,000 hours experience flying a variety of airliners.

"Airspeed is everything," he said. "You have airspeed, you live. You don't, you die."

Investigators are still trying to nail down hundreds of details about the crash that also injured dozens. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman has cautioned against drawing conclusions from the details released so far.

But investigators already know a great deal.

They've listened to the Boeing 777's voice recorder, which captured the last two hours of conversation in the cockpit. They've downloaded its flight data recorder, which captured 1,400 indicators of what was happening on the plane.

The flight's four pilots have been interviewed, as have passengers and dozens of witnesses. Air traffic control recordings and video of the flight's last moments, including the crash itself, have been examined.

According to details released so far, the pilot flying the plane, Lee Gang-kuk, 46, had nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience, but just 35 hours flying a Boeing 777. He had recently completed training that qualified him to fly passengers in the 777, and was about halfway through his post-qualification training.

He was seated in the left cockpit pilot seat. In the co-pilot position was Lee Jeong-Min, an experienced captain who was supervising Lee Gang-kuk's training. It was Lee Gang-kuk's first time landing a 777 in San Francisco.

At 11:19:23 PDT, after a nearly 11-hour flight, the plane was traveling over the San Francisco Peninsula. The weather was near perfect, sunny with light winds.

Lee Jeong-Min and a third pilot sitting in a jump seat just behind the main seats, a first officer, were supposed to be monitoring the plane's controls. One of their most important jobs was to closely monitor the plane's two airspeed indicators.

In the U.S., if an amber bar is more than five knots above or below the target speed during landing, the pilot flying is supposed to abort and make another attempt, according to pilots interviewed by The Associated Press.

As the plane descended to 1,600 feet, the autopilot was turned off. At 1,400 feet, the plane's airspeed was about 170 knots.

The flight data recorder shows the plane's autothrottle ? similar to a car's cruise control ? was set on idle during the approach, Hersman said, and that there were multiple commands at times given to the autothrottle and autopilot.

At 11:26:58 and 1,000 feet, the pilots made contact with the airport tower. When they were cleared to land 12 seconds later, the plane's altitude had dropped to about 600 feet. The plane was configured for its approach and the landing gear was down. The airspeed was about 149 knots. A target speed of 137 knots was set.

At 500 feet there was an audible automated altitude alert. The airspeed was about 134 knots. At this point that pilots realized they weren't properly lined up with the runway, Hersman said.

"Between 500 and 200 feet, they had a lateral deviation and they were low. They were trying to correct at that point," she said.

At 200 feet and another automated altitude call out, the airspeed had slowed to 118 knots ? well below the target level.

At this point, U.S. pilots would typically call for an aborted landing because the plane was more than 5 knots below its target speed, Collins said. But at no point in between 500 and 100 feet does the voice recorder show the pilots making any comment related to airspeed, Hersman said at a briefing Thursday.

Hersman said at earlier briefings that it was not until 200 feet ? 16 seconds before impact ? that Lee Jeong-Min, the instructor pilot "recognized the auto-throttles were not maintaining speed."

At 125 feet and 112 knots, both throttles started moving forward, indicating more fuel was being sent to the engines to increase power and speed. That was eight seconds before impact. Even if the autothrottles weren't fully turned on, either of the pilots in the two front seats could reach down and manually push the throttle levers forward to increase power.

It was about this time that the cockpit voice recorder indicated the first officer ? the third pilot seating behind the front two pilots ? realized the plane was traveling too slowly and called for an increase in speed.

A second later, Lee Gang-kuk's yoke can be heard rattling violently on the voice recorder. This is the sound of a stick shaker going off, a piece of safety equipment that tells a pilot the plane is about to stall because it has slowed to a dangerous speed and lost lift.

When the pilots in the two front seats realized the plane was in trouble, they both reached for the throttle. Passengers heard a loud roar as the plane revved up in a last-minute attempt to abort the landing.

At three seconds before impact, the plane reached its slowest speed of 103 knots. Its engines were at 50 percent power and power was increasing. At this time, one of the pilots called for an aborted landing.

At one and a half seconds before impact, another of the pilots calls for an aborted landing.

At 11:28, with the airspeed up three knots, the landing gear, followed by the plane's tail, collided with the seawall just short of Runway 28 Left.

The plane careened wildly before slamming down onto the tarmac and sliding about 1,000 feet. The tail was sheared off and three flight attendants seated in the back of the plane fell out. Rocks from the seawall and pieces of the mangled landing gear were strewn along the runway.

The NTSB's investigation is being followed closely by pilots in the U.S. and around the world. At one gathering of pilots in Dallas Wednesday night, the discussion centered on why the Asiana pilots didn't realize their low speed sooner. No one had an answer.

"There are a lot of very experienced airline pilots who are scratching their heads right now," Collins said.

Survey: Military more popular than teachers, doctors

Servicemembers are more popular than teachers and doctors -- but perceptions of all three have dropped since 2009.

The Pew Research Center released survey results Thursday that break down how 10 professions rank in terms of their contribution to society. The military is seen as one of the highest contributing professions.

A cool 78 percent of people surveyed believe the military contributes ?a lot? to society, compared with 72 percent for teachers and 66 percent for doctors.

Other professions ranked ? listed here from most to least contributing after the three mentioned - are: scientists, engineers, clergy, artists, journalists, business executives and lawyers.

Women edged out men in believing that servicemembers contribute a lot to society - but barely, especially when the margin of error, +/-2.1 percentage points, is taken into consideration. The biggest disparity across demographic groups came ideologically, with 86 percent of Republicans saying the military contributes a lot to society, compared with 75 percent of Democrats.

There has been a slight decline in the perception of how the military contributes to society, from 84 percent in 2009 to 78 percent in 2013.

But at least it?s not as bad as journalists ? which has dropped 10 percent from 38 to 28. Yikes!

The full report from Pew Research Center is available here.?

At Ramadan meals, Egypt weighs split in society ? Artesia News

CAIRO (AP) ? As the sun set on the first day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, families across Cairo gathered for the fast-breaking iftar meal in a country that in the last two weeks has seen protests by millions, a coup against an elected president and the deaths of dozens of people in clashes with the military.

Ramadan is traditionally a time of personal reflection and feeling a sense of brotherhood with fellow Muslims, but in the aftermath of the military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, the divisions among Egyptians extend even down to this traditional meal.

On one side of the city, Tahrir Square remains the symbolic center of the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak and later opposed Morsi. Across town in an eastern district, Morsi?s supporters have coalesced around a major intersection in front of the mosque of Rabaah al-Adawiya.

Breaking their fast outdoors, the people in the two camps expressed bafflement and disdain for the other side.

?I don?t know if the people at Rabaah al-Adawiya are out of their minds or if they are brainwashed,? said Shenouda William, a 35-year-old lawyer, who sat with about 100 people in the echoing emptiness of Tahrir Square to break their fast. Others described the Morsi supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood as ignorant peasants or possibly Palestinian and Syrian refugees looking for food and a place to sleep.

A Christian, William chose to join the iftar as a symbol of national unity and described this as ?the best Ramadan I?ve ever known because the Brotherhood are not here ? they succeeded in dividing the people, and this will never happen again.?

Egyptians remain divided, however, and while the Brotherhood alienated much of the country in their year in power, they still have supporters who came by the tens of thousands to break their fast Wednesday night in a clear show of strength.

Families thronged into the boulevards near the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque and sat under tents or on long sheets of blue tarpaulins to first pray and then eat after the sun set.

Fireworks marked the end of the day and an imam recited the call to prayer as people tentatively took their first sips of water and ate dates handed out to the crowd.

Then came the communal prayer ? an awesome sight as thousands stretching into the distance silently rose and fell in the ritual prostration before reciting ?Amen? in a single voice.

?We do our prayers to bring victory, especially this month with these developments. We hope he will grant us this,? said Mohammed El-Sayyed, a college student from Mansoura after the prayers and before he joined his family for the meal. ?There might be problems and people might die, but resolution will come this month.?

The first iftar of Ramadan is traditionally spent with family, so El-Sayyed talked his father into bringing the whole clan down to the mosque rally ? a move clearly followed by thousands of others as families picnicked around them.

Across town in Tahrir Square, construction worker and youth organizer Ahmed Abdel Aziz sees a kind of family in the more modest gathering of people who ate chicken and rice under the hulking Mugamma building, Cairo?s bureaucratic heart.

?After all the events of the last days, it is great to celebrate the first day of Ramadan in Tahrir. Here, it is better than being at home. I feel like I am with my family here,? Aziz said, drawing with relief on his first cigarette of the day.

Tamarod, the youth-driven campaign that is credited with spearheading the movement to oust Morsi, will hold its own iftar in Tahrir Square on Friday, doubtlessly drawing huge numbers of people. But the anti-Morsi crowd?s numbers are also small because they see themselves as victorious and have less need to show their strength in the streets.

The Wednesday night meal in Tahrir came courtesy of well-known Egyptian director Khaled Youssef, who stopped by to see how things were going.

?Ramadan has always been a time of union and reunion, but this time we have a lost group, a group that doesn?t acknowledge the will of the people,? he said, referring to supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Back at Rabaah Al-Adawiya, where many in the crowd also were eating roast chicken and rice, most refused to believe that most of the country supported the military coup. People suggested that those in Tahrir had been paid off or had been fooled, convinced that the true Egyptians were sitting around them.

?In Tahrir Square now, it is just those from the previous regime, the businessmen, and the military,? said Ali Awad, an elderly, bespectacled teacher trainer from the northern town of Zagazig. ?Those who want things to be right want Morsi.?

But while the crowd outside the mosque certainly represents a large section of the country, it can?t be described as inclusive. All the women without exception wore conservative dress, and sharing space with the portraits of Morsi was a huge picture of ultraconservative icon Omar Abdel-Rahman ? the blind sheik imprisoned in the U.S. for masterminding the attacks on New York landmarks in the 1990s.

At the end of the prayer, several young men chanted ?Egypt, an Islamic state!? and ?By our blood and souls, we will sacrifice ourselves for Islam!? ? the kind of rhetoric that has made many Egyptians uneasy with the Brotherhood and its fellow travelers from the ultraconservative Salafi movement.

Amid the prayer, the food and the camaraderie of the evening outside the mosque, there was also a deep sense of unease at the future.

The government had ordered the arrest of the Brotherhood?s top leadership, most of whom are believed to be hidden among the thousands at the sit-in, and many in the crowd talked about how they had helped those who were wounded Monday in clashes with the military. That violence had left at least 51 Brotherhood supporters dead and hundreds wounded.

Sayyed Ezz, a math teacher from Alexandria, was handing out cups of chilled water to people with his wife. He described how during the trip to Cairo, police stopped his microbus and searched all the passengers ? saying it was like the dark days of the Brotherhood?s repression in the 1950s at the hands of Egypt?s first president.

?They are going to kill us. It?s starting,? he said, ?It is like the days of Gamal Abdel Nasser, and they are going to do it again.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As House Republicans weighed their next steps on immigration Wednesday, former President George W. Bush nudged them ever so gently from the Texas sidelines to carry a "benevolent spirit" into a debate that includes a possible path to citizenship for millions living in the country illegally.

The former president's ability to sway a new generation of House conservatives was a matter of considerable doubt, especially because many of the tea party-backed lawmakers have risen to power since he left the White House and are strongly on record in opposition to any citizenship provision.

"We care what people back home say, not what some former president says," declared Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a second-term Kansas Republican who has clashed with the party leadership in the House.

Still, the timing and substance of Bush's remarks were reminders of the imperative that many national party leaders feel that Republicans must broaden their appeal among Hispanic voters to compete successfully in future presidential elections. President Barack Obama took more than 70 percent of their votes in winning a second term last fall.

"America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time," Bush said at a naturalization ceremony at his presidential library in Dallas.

For their part, Democrats quickly embraced the former president's message, challenging House Speaker John Boehner to proceed in the same spirit.

At the Capitol, Republican aides said a closed-door meeting of the rank and file that consumed much of the afternoon was designed as a listening session, rather than a forum for deciding how the House will proceed as it considers legislation to overhaul the immigration system. The eventual strategy will be up to the leadership, Boehner and others, to decide in the coming days.

Boehner, R-Ohio, has said he wants the House to pass legislation on the subject before lawmakers go home for a four-week break over August, beginning with a measure to toughen border security. He has also said he won't put any bill on the House floor that doesn't have the support of at least half of the GOP rank and file, a pledge that only increases the challenge for Democrats and others who want to give a chance at citizenship to millions now in the country illegally.

"I don't know that Republican leadership has a strategy that is workable," Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the second-ranking House Democrat, told reporters.

Unlike a sweeping, bipartisan bill that cleared the Senate last month, the House Judiciary Committee has cleared four smaller measures in recent weeks, none of which would include the possibility of citizenship.

One would toughen enforcement of immigration laws, and includes a provision that would permit local police officers to enforce such laws as part of an attempt to raise the number of deportations. It also encourages immigrants in the United States illegally to depart voluntarily, an echo of Mitt Romney's call for "self-deportation" in the 2012 presidential race.

Other measures would create a new mandatory system for employees to verify the legal status of their workers, create a new temporary program for farm workers and expand the number of visas for employees in technology industries.

By contrast, the Senate bill, passed 68-32, would increase border security, provide a pathway to citizenship for many of the estimated 11 million immigrants illegally in the country, expand the highly skilled worker program and set up new guest worker arrangements for lower-skilled workers and farm laborers.

In more than four years since he left the White House, Bush has rarely spoken out publicly about either policy or politics ? and he said he didn't particularly want to do either as he addressed the naturalization ceremony at his presidential library.

Still, his message was an unmistakable echo of the failed attempt he made as president to overhaul immigration laws, including providing a route to citizenship for many.

He said the nation has a problem: 'The laws governing the immigration system are broken. The system is broken."

Without mentioning Republicans or Democrats, he said "I do hope there is a positive resolution to the debate" now unfolding in Congress. "And I hope during the debate that we keep a benevolent spirit in mind, and we understand the contributions immigrants make to our country."

Bush's campaign to overhaul immigration legislation while in the White House included the political calculation that Republicans needed to take steps to appeal to Hispanic voters who are an increasingly large part of the population, particularly in states like Texas, Florida, Nevada and Colorado.

At the same time, relatively few House Republicans represents districts with substantial Hispanic populations, and many say they fear primary election challenges from the right if they support citizenship for immigrants in the United States illegally.

Within a few hours of Bush's remarks, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi took note of them in a letter to Boehner.

"In that same spirit, the 113th Congress has the opportunity to make our mark on American history by enacting comprehensive immigration reform," she wrote.

House Democrats insist that a path to citizenship be included in any legislation, and Obama has said he won't sign any bill that lacks it.

"We believe that the president is very firm on that," Rep. Ruben Hinojosa said after he and other members of the all-Democratic Congressional Hispanic Caucus met with Obama at the White House.
